Even if there is a console command that I don't know about that could force a companion, that would work for me. This has a gun that you can set for various things, im sure making npcs essential is one of the functions (I know it can turn essential off, I think it does the opposite too). Not sure if it would work with modded npcs, im guessing it might. Certainly worth a try.
